At the end of 2020, the 'Voice of Attorney' (Golos advokata) project organized conferences on violations of professional rights and prosecution of attorneys in Russia and Belarus. Attendees from Russia, Belarus, and ten other countries discussed the challenges of the profession. Developments in 2021 proved that the topic has not only kept its perceived urgency but has become even more acute. The rights of attorneys working on high-profile cases are violated, as are the rights of the defenders of clients whose names do not get media attention. These violations happen daily. They take place both in Russia and other former Soviet countries.
On May 29, the 'Voice of Attorney' in partnership with the Committee for the Bar Protection, Team 29, ICJ, and Lawyers for Lawyers will host an international online conference on the challenges and threats faced by Russian attorneys.
We will talk about the most pressing and aggravated issues of the past months with the invited experts: Russian lawyers and representatives of international human rights organizations. We will talk about what the legal community can do in response to violations of attorneys' professional rights and illegal prosecution by the law-enforcement authorities.
An invited expert from Belarus will talk about how the situation of attorneys' rights in their country has changed compared to November 2020.
